NOTABLE MILESTONES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AI - PART 2

The early 2010s saw breakthroughs in deep learning enabled by increased computing power and larger datasets which led to advancements in natural language processing and image & speech recognition.

From the 2010 to present we see continual progress on

o   Virtual Assistants such as Alexa and Siri

o   Robotics used in manufacturing, medical and households

o   Self-driving cars

In 2011 we saw IBMs Watson win the Jeopardy game show and in 2016 AlphaGo defeated the world champion of Go. Go is a 2500 year old Chinese board game which requires strategic thinking to control territory on the board.

In 2020 OpenAI released GPT-3, the third version of its Generative Pre-trained Transformer(GPT) model. GPT-3 exhibited great advances in natural language processing and generation, including writing essays, composing poetry, and answering questions. ChatGPT is based on GPT-3 but tailored for generating human-like responses in conversational contexts.

The above milestones represent just a fraction of the developments in AI over seven decades. The field continues to advance rapidly, with ongoing breakthroughs in areas such as machine learning, robotics, computer vision, and natural language understanding.

Interestingly people are now reaping the benefits of AI everyday without even realizing it. Spell check is wonderful! Product recommendations maybe not so much if you are on a tight budget! Where would you be without Navigation showing continually updated travel times based on weather and traffic patterns? AI is fully ingrained in our daily personal lives now and the future transformation will be even more rapid.

All the best…
